The Federal Communications Commission is redefining what broadband is

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC, roughly equivalent to the NTC here in the PH) is proposing to raise the minimum speeds that define a broadband connection in the US from 4Mbps down and 1Mbps up to 25Mbps down and 3Mbps up, according to Ars Technica.

The move is part of the Annual Broadband Progress Report that’s mandated by the US congress, where the FCC has to determine if broadband internet access is being deployed across the US in a “reasonable and timely” fashion.

Since the FCC is redefining what constitutes broadband in the US, it may be high time for the National Telecommunications Commission to do the same. Internet speeds for the Philippines is among the slowest in the world, and it’s high time that Philippine consumers get fast internet just like our neighbors.
