How exactly do you get the most out of Smart’s 30MB of free data?

So you know that Smart is essentially giving away 30MB of free data per day to their pre-paid customers. At first glance, 30MB is really not a lot – but you can actually squeeze quite a bit from the free offer by doing a few things. Things like:

Use Opera Mini as your main browser

Opera Mini is an awesome little browser since it actually compresses websites before delivering it to you. It’s the browser of choice for many feature phones out there in the market because it’s fast, lightweight and reduces the amount of data it takes to serve a website to you. You’ll also want to access Facebook through the mobile site using Opera and not through the app, as the app automatically loads photos, which will eat up your meager 30MB of data.

Do not download anything

This is pretty self-explanatory, but it still needs to be said. Downloading anything using Smart’s 30MB of data will immediately end your free ride down Smart’s internet pipe, so don’t do it. Opening emails are okay, downloading attachments isn’t.

Spinnr

Avoid YouTube, Spotify and other streaming apps like the plague, use Spinnr if you need music

Since you’re working with a limited amount of data, you’ll want to avoid any kind of streaming app, whether it be video or music. There’s actually still a way for you to enjoy streaming music without actually killing your data charge – Smart’s Spinnr is just a measly Php 29 for a one month, and Smart has said that its use doesn’t count towards your data costs.

Disable data syncs

Even though you’re not using your phone, it actually uses a large amount of data to sync everything from your photos to your apps. You can actually turn this off in your Android device by going to your settings, then accounts and turning them off. You’ll also want to keep a close eye on your data usage by turning on the Data warking on your mobile device. Set it to 15MB to warn you if you’re using too much data, so you’ll get a heads-up that you’ve gone through half of your data allotment for the day.

30MB isn’t a lot of data, but through smart management, you’ll probably be able to use it till the end of the day.
