Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase One Box Set Review

As Iron Man 3 opens nationwide, we here at Unbox have been preparing for Phase 2 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe by looking back (and opening) the Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase One 10-disc Limited Edition Bluray Box Set. Whew! That was a mouthful.

If you tuned in to our Monday podcast, we actually unboxed the glorious metallic-case replica where Col. Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) was keeping the Tesseract. We didn’t’ had enough time to go through all the nooks and crannies of the box set so we thought we’d create a specialized blog post about it.

Marvel Studios, after the success of Iron Man (2008), decided to create a mega-franchise of movies stringing together various A-List superheroes and putting them in one big blockbuster movie event–this is the Avengers, the culminating movie that pulls together the stories of Iron Man (Robert Downy, Jr.), Bruce Banner (initially Edward Norton for the 2008 movie to be replaced by Mark Ruffalo for the Avengers), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Captain America (Chris Evans) and a constant group of supporting members who continuously appeared throughout the films like Col. Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) in Iron Man 1, 2 and Captain America, Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) in Iron Man 2, Hawk Eye (Jeremy Renner) in Thor and Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) in Iron Man, Iron Man 2, and Thor.

This amazing box set is a testament to that success and we’re here to show you the goods.

Ooooh! Shiny!
Ooooh! Shiny!

Let’s start off with the case. The material itself is hardened plastic. It’s not as hard as some PVC cases though so do not attempt to substitute your actual laptop bag for this. Yes, Carlo, I’m looking at you! -_- If you look closely, the design on the case is quite a departure from what it looks like in the Avengers movie. This was the cause of a huge patent infringement fiasco back at Disney and the reason why this box set was only released this month instead of last year. Apparently, Disney didn’t get the permission from Rimowa (the brand of suitcase that housed the Tesseract in the movie) to replicate the design for the Limited Edition Box set. Rimowa pressed charges and Disney had to re-do all their cases.

Given this, we still end up with a pretty sweet looking case! Oh and the middle part lights up as well. 😉

My only qualm with this is the handle. It’s pretty hard to actually carry the case as intended because of the small gap. However, once you open the case, that’s when the magic truly happens.

Tadaaaa!!!!
Tadaaaa!!!!

The light isn’t as bright as it’s shown in the product photo and the Tesseract here isn’t the semi-translucent crystal that it was. Still for a box-set replica the details are pretty amazing. Oh and the Tesseract lights up as well! Yay!

Paper sleeves. Not the best choice to house your Bluray disc. :(
Paper sleeves. Not the best choice to house your Bluray disc. 🙁

The movie discs are housed in special paper-sleeve packages which have amazing original artworks. But aesthetic aside, paper-sleeves are the worst type of packaging as this increases the risk of disc scratches versus the regular cases.

The box set contains 6 movies: Iron Man, Iron Man 2 (without the bonus Bluray Disc), The Incredible Hulk, Thor (3D and 2D), Captain America (3D and 2D), the Avengers (3D and 2D), and a special Bluray disc just for this box-set alone containing an extensive (and exclusive) behind-the-scenes look at the Avengers and other info (I have yet to really sit down and watch this).

Most Limited Edition Box Sets end there–they give you a special box and a nice packaging for the movies…but not this box set. The real gem of the Phase 1 box set are the Dossiers packed with amazing movie set paraphernalia’s and replicas such as Steve Roger’s military assessment and photo before the Super Soldier Program or Stark Blueprints of the Arc Reactor or Thor’s fake ID as Donald Blake even down to newspaper clippings of Banner’s experiment gone wrong. You know what, we’ll just show you the photos and you can see for yourself. 🙂

There’s actually a bit more! I know, it’s crazy! hehe

So, the big question is: should you purchase this?

Reasons to purchase:

– You’re an Avengers / Marvel Fan, you really enjoyed the movies, and want to take home a piece of that magic.

-You’re a fan of movies, in general, and you like to collect all the behind-the-scenes stuff and bonus materials.

– You have disposable income since this retails for about Php 10,950 here in the Philippines (check out www.facebook.com/CastleGeek they might still be selling those). If you have relatives in the US, you might want to course the purchase through Amazon.com since we got ours for less than $150.00 including delivery charges!

Reasons NOT to purchase:

-You like the movies but that?s about it. We suggest you buy the movies individually, rent them out or wait for it to be shown on HBO.

-You do not have a Bluray player. (We suggest upgrading. You’re missing out on a whole new viewing experience.)

-You hate these comic book movies. You feel they’re for kids and you feel it’s dumb for grown adults to keep supporting them. Well, up yours too, mister!

All in all, I can’t wait for Phase 2 to start (and we’ll probably be watching Iron Man 3 later this afternoon). We’ll make sure to give you guys our first impressions of it afterwards (non-spoilers of course).
