Samsung Chief Arrested

The timing for this article couldn’t be more unfortunate. While we’re still riding on a high from seeing the QLED TV from Samsung and all the other consumer electronics they showed us at the Samsung Southeast Asia and Oceania Forum 2017, this news item has been making its rounds in the tech scene: Samsung’s Group Chief, Jay Y. Lee has been arrested over some pretty serious allegations. The charge? Mr. Lee seems to have been pulling major strings and bribing people who have the ear of South Korea’s President, Park Geun-hye. Jay Y. Lee will be prosecuted for bribery and embezzlement, among many other charges.

Park Geun-hye is currently suspended from office since she is currently facing impeachment proceedings where Lee is said to be a major player in a scandal where an adviser of the President has been granting special government favors to business leaders in the country. Jay Y. Lee has denied the allegations and it seems the company has his back as well. While the investigation is currently on-going, Samsung maintains that everything at the company is running smoothly due to its structure.

After the year they had in 2016, it really seems like the Korean company really can’t catch a break, can they?
