Bigger isn’t always better

A few days ago Sony Philippines officially launched their new flagship Z3 smartphones, which included the Z3 and its smaller brother, the Z3 Compact. While many people are considering the Z3, personally we think that the Z3 Compact is the better smartphone of the two. Why? Well..

1. It’s easier to use

The adage “bigger is better” has always been rammed through our throats when it comes to phones. It kind of makes sense, if you think about it – a bigger phone allows you to see more things on the display compared to a smaller one. In truth though, that’s not always the case. Anybody with small, dainty hands can tell you the issues they have when trying to use a 5.5-inch, or even a 5-inch phone one handed. We actually enjoyed using the smaller Z1 Compact when we reviewed it, along with another sub 5-inch phone, the MyPhone Infinity Lite. The Xperia Z3 Compact, while bigger than the original Z1 Compact, is still small enough to be used with one hand without any issues. A few female friends have actually commented that they’d gladly give up their 5-inch flagships if they had a smaller alternative that didn’t sacrifice on specs or hardware. Speaking of..

2. It’s smaller, but not slower

One of the best things about the Z1 Compact was how Sony managed to stuff such awesome hardware in a smaller body. While there’s a lot of mini branded devices out there that sport the same design as the brand’s flagship, most of them don’t even come close to the performance of the original. Sony’s move to buck that trend is welcome, as people can now get a smaller smartphone that still has top-notch specs that’s comparable to other flagships. Let’s just say that a good indicator that you’re doing something right is if your competitor offers an equivalent device.

3. One of the few sub 5-inch water resistant phones out there

While there’s now a bevy of smartphones that have water resistant bodies, there’s not a lot of smartphones that do so in a sub 5-inch frame. Sony’s Xperia Z3 compact offers the highest water resistance that’s available on smartphones (IP65/68). Off the top of our head, we can’t think of another sub 5-inch smartphone that actually offers that, which makes the Z3 Compact unique, which isn’t the case with the larger Z3.

4. Its HD display isn’t as bad as it seems

While some people may be disappointed to learn that the Z3 Compact sports just an HD display, you shouldn’t fret. At 4.6-inches, the display is still pretty great, and in our hands-on we noticed that the images and icons were extremely crisp and detailed. Even if Sony went with a higher resolution display, you wouldn’t really notice the difference, and would lead to needless power wastage instead of a better user experience.

5. It has awesome battery life

One thing about having a less power-hungry HD display is that your battery life is leauges better than a phone that has a 4K resolution display. The Z3 Compact, with its 4.6 HD display and 2600mAh battery, is said to have phenomenal battery life according to early reviews, which mirrors the battery performance of the larger Z3. Clearly, Sony’s tweaks to the software has managed to deliver increased battery life.
