Packaging and Contents

The Iconia W4 comes in Acer’s typical packaging, with the picture of the tablet on the front, with the specifications listed on the back. Opening the box, you’ll see the tablet itself wrapped in plastic.

Inside the box, you’ll see various warranty cards, as well as a recovery disc, manual and a complimentary product key for Microsoft’s Office Home and Student 2013. There’s also a USB cable, charger and a male to female USB cable inside that can be used as a USB OTG cable for other devices.

Initial Impressions: Very quick and handy Windows machine

IMG_7797

We’ve handled the Iconia W4 before, and we’re happy to confirm that our initial impressions were spot on now that we’ve had more time with the device. The Iconia W4 is quick and zippy, and wholly capable of handling Windows 8.1 and most basic tasks. What’s nice about the Iconia W4 is that it’s not a hobbled Windows RT tablet – it’s a full-fledged Windows 8.1 machine, and is capable of running programs that you’d typically put in your home desktop. Of course, there’s a limit to what the W4 can do – it can’t do any graphically intense games for example, or run CPU intense applications like Video Editing programs.

The capability to run native Windows applications on the Iconia W4 also makes it a great choice for people who need a highly portable device for work or school but are unwilling (or unable) to migrate to iOS or Android apps. We’re part of that statistic – while we regularly test and own several Android tablets, there’s still some apps that doesn’t have a good Android equivalent in terms of either performance or user experience. We still bring around a hulking notebook whenever we cover events, so the Iconia W4 is a godsend for us. Incidentally, this entire unboxing article was written with the Iconia W4.
