We unbox the absolutely awesome StriX DSP headphones

We usually don’t do unboxings of headphones, but today’s an exception. ASUS Philippines handed us their latest Strix DSP gaming headphones to try out and box is it a beast. You many not know it, but ASUS has had a long history of offering audio accessories for their Republic of Gamers lineup, though none is as flamboyantly designed as the Strix DSP. As a side note, it seems that the Strix brand is a brand new accessory brand of ASUS that’s separate from its ROG lineup.

Packaging and contents

The Strix DSP comes in a very big black box that has a photo of a menacing eye staring into you. This design will kind of make sense once you open the box and take your first look at the Strix DSP for the first time. Yeap, that orange looking eye is the massive 60mm drivers, which have been cleverly designed to look like owl’s eyes when the two cups are folded.

Aside from the actual cans, you’ll also see a massive USB audio station, 2 additional 3.5mm cables for phones, a USB cable for the audio station, a removable microphone for the headphones and the requisite user manual.

Initial Impressions: Awesome 7.1 surround sound headphones

ASUS has clearly spared no expense in designing and making the Strix DSP headphones. Aside from featuring massive 60mm drivers, the headphones is also capable of running 7.1 surround sound via the USB audio station. Speaking of the audio station, you’re able to do much more than just control the volume of your game with it. It’s also able to control the microphone level, as well as implement four distinct sound profiles for games (FPS, RPG, race, etc) that boosts the critical audio details.

The USB audio station also has an integrated microphone in it that filters environmental noise like the clacking of mechanical keyboards or the hum of airconditioners and fans and supposedly helps you communicate clearly with your friends while playing games. Since we play a lot of FPS games that require massive amounts of teamwork (Red Orchestra 2, ARMA 3, Insurgency) this will come in handy later on.

Our initial impressions of the headphones itself is pretty promising, and the sound is amazing when playing games like Dying Light – the moans and groans of zombies are really realistic, and you can distinctly determine which direction they’re coming from while you’re playing. Even better, the USB audio station is completely plug and play, and requires no special software to be used – just plug it in your PC and start playing your favorite game.

We’ll be playing with the Strix DSP in the next few days, and we’ll be writing what we think of it as soon as possible. We haven’t been provided a price for these pair of cans by ASUS yet, we’ll be updating this post if they give us the official SRP.
