Meet Asus’ newest transforming notebook/smartphone/tablet!

Looks like our initial guess with Asus’ teaser was spot on! The company unveiled their latest product, the Transformer Book V that aims to shake up what we think about converged devices. For a lack of a better term, think of the Transformer Book V as a hybrid Windows notebook that can take an Android smartphone in its lid. Aside from being a regular Windows notebook, the Transformer Book V’s lid can be detached, which transforms the device into a Windows tablet as well. When you dock the smartphone component of the V onto the lid, the V can then switch to the Android OS, which allows the user to use it either as an Android notebook, or as a tablet when you take off the lid.

The display of the notebook/tablet component of the V is a 12.5-inch IPS deal, which has a HD resolution. The tablet component also packs 4GB of RAM and a 28Wh battery that promises up to 10 hours of usable battery life. Other specs include 128GB of flash storage, which also works with a 1TB HDD that’s embedded inside the keyboard.

On the phone side of the equation, you’re looking at a 5-inch smartphone powered by Intel’s latest 64-bit quad-core Atom processor (Moorefield) paired with delicious LTE as well as 2GB of RAM and a 2500mAh battery. As far as the optics go, you get a rear 8-megapixel camera complimented with a 2-megapixel front camera.

Unfortunately, we weren’t able to get our hands on the device when it was unveiled as it was under some pretty serious security (read: glass cover). An Asus rep did show us how it would work when it’s released in the future, though it’s still not clear when in the future this thing will pop up (we’re guessing it will be a while). As far as price goes, we’re guessing this particular all-in-one gadget will be really expensive and hazardous to your wallet, as you’re essentially buying three gadgets at one go.
