We unbox the Cherry Mobile Cosmos One!

The Cosmos One is yet another affordable octa-core smartphone from Cherry Mobile, who has not stopped releasing smartphones since the start of this year (they’ll be launching a new batch of phones later tonight). This time around, Cherry Mobile has decided to sell the Cosmos One for a limited time, during August 30, and has stated that they won’t be selling any more after that. It’s a bit surprising then, that they decided to send us a review device of the limited edition phone, which begs the question – are they planning to start selling the Cosmos One again?

Packaging and contents

The Cosmos One comes in a blue box that has a carton sleeve over it. The packaging itself is pretty ace, and the outside of the box spells out exactly what you’re getting inside the box.

Accessories for the Cosmos One is pretty standard CM fare – charger, cable, headphones and charger.

Initial Impressions: Stylish, faux-leather backed octa-core smartphone

Like most of Cherry Mobile’s other devices, the Cosmos One is a bit underwhelming in press photos, but is actually pretty swanky looking in person. The back (which is removable) is treated with a nice faux-leather texture that makes the phone nice to hold in the hands. The corners of the Cosmos One are rounded, and there’s a slight curve on both sides of the device that further aids in grip. A metallic band surrounds the device which adds to the premium feel.

The volume rocker is located on the left side of the device, while the right side contains the power button and a shortcut key for the camera. We haven’t really seen a lot of CM phones sporting a hardware camera shutter, and this little addition will make it easier for people to take photos and selfies.

Speaking of the camera, the camera module is located on the back, near the top of the device, along with an LED flash. The bezels are nice and thin. The capacitive Android navigation keys are located on the bottom, naturally, and light up when touched.

The Cosmos One is the first Android smartphone we’ve seen from Cherry Mobile sporting a 1.4GHz octa-core processor from MediaTek. Most of their other octa-core offerings (including the more affordable Pulse) run MediaTek’s 1.7GHz octa-core SoC to keep things running. So it was interesting to see the Cosmos One’s AnTuTu score, coming in at around 25K.

Aside from the obvious octa-core appeal, Cherry Mobile is also touting the hand gesture sensor of the Cosmos One as well as the Miracast Wireless Display capabilities of the phone. We’re not sure of the appeal of the former, but the latter should be useful for people who like projecting their phones into large displays without the aid of wires.

That’s it for this unboxing. Watch out for the full review in the coming days.
