Cherry Mobile Z!

The Cherry Mobile Z is the last model in the Cosmos line that hasn’t hit store shelves yet. Fortunately for us the good folks over at Cherry Mobile sent us a review unit to test out and feature on the podcast. We’ve been playing around with the device for a few hours now and it’s definitely impressive and has huge potential to be a best seller. To kick things off we’ll share with you guys our unboxing and initial hands-on and then follow through with the full review later this week.

Before anything let’s quickly go over the specifications.

Cherry Mobile Cosmos Z Spec Sheet

As you can see in the spec sheet it’s a very solid offering. Some might find the Php11,999 a little too much but we’ll reserve judgement if it’s worth it come the full review. Let’s jump into the unboxing!

Packaging and Unboxing of the Cherry Mobile Cosmos Z

Go Snake Eyes!

Just like the other models in the Cosmos series, the Cherry Mobile Cosmos Z comes in a rather small and compact white carton box. We’re not really fans of the packaging of the Cosmos series. We love the white box and the simple product shot up front but the small and softer carton (compared to previous models) is unbecoming of a series of devices that are positioned to be the flagship models. We also saw that Cherry Mobile is supporting the Cosmos series with a TVC featuring no less than Anne Curtis. A little more investment in the packaging shouldn’t have hurt, hehe.

By the way, here’s the Anne Curtis Cosmos TVC.

Anyway, unboxing was very simple. We just removed the tape and pulled the lid and we were immediately greeted by the Cherry Mobile Cosmos Z. Since this particular phone was a review unit it didn’t come anymore wrapped in plastic or with the screen protectors. We picked up the unit, got a feel for it, set it aside, and then checked what else was in the box.

Nothing out of the ordinary in the compartment below the phone. We found the micro USB to USB cable, earphones, wall charger, and the manual.

Hardware Impressions

Looking good!

The Cherry Mobile Cosmos Z is a gorgeous device. While it’s dominantly made of plastic, it’s very compact and solid making it a pleasure to hold. The 5-inch form factor is just right as a smartphone in this case thanks to the thin body and the curved edges and back. Speaking of the back cover, we noticed that it’s very similar to the design of the Lenovo P770i. It has the same glossy plastic with the pattern.

The display is probably one of the main highlights of the Cherry Mobile Cosmos Z. It utilizes OGS technology (One Glass Screen) which basically eliminates the layer in between the glass and the LCD. This lets the images pop out more as if they’re floating on the display. Combine that with the level of brightness and you have a surefire winning proposition.

Software Impressions

Apps work really well

The Cherry Mobile Cosmos Z runs on Android Jelly Bean 4.2.1. It’s safe to say that the Mediatek turbo quad-core processor is more than enough to power the device so it can smoothly run whatever you throw at it. In our short time with it we observed that most of the basic and core functions were all buttery smooth so two thumbs up to Cherry Mobile for this one.

We’ll tackle the software and over-all performance more in detail during the full review.

Full Review Coming Soon
