We finally get to unbox the Cherry Mobile Cosmos Z2!

After more than a month of waiting, we finally got our review sample of Cherry Mobile’s latest flagship smartphone, the Cosmos Z2. The Cosmos Z2 is probably the prettiest device that the company has come out with, possessing a design that you’d expect from a foreign brand like Sony rather than a local one like Cherry Mobile. That only goes to show just how far local companies have gone in terms of quality of their products, something that we hope continues as the months go by. Anyway, before we unbox the Cosmos Z2, let’s get a refresher on its specs, shall we?

Packaging and contents

The Cosmos Z2 comes in quite a different box than Cherry Mobile’s other devices. We were used to the green, subdued packaging on the Rave 2.0 and Sonic 2.0 so we were a bit surprised by the loud, almost flashy packaging of the Cosmos Z2. The front of the box of the Cosmos Z2 lists all the important features of the new flagship – 18-megapixel camera with BSI, USB OTG capability, octa-core processor, Dragontrail glass protection and HSPA+ capabilities. The back of the box lists all the other important specs that we’ve listed above.

Opening the box, you’ll see the Cosmos Z2 wrapped in plastic. Diving deeper, you’ll see the included accessories which is a bit sparse – USB cable, charger, headphones and a manual.

Initial Impressions: Easy on the eyes, still wickedly fast

As we noted in our initial review during the launch of the Cosmos Z2, the device is extremely sleek, elegant and handsome, and is probably CM’s thinnest smartphone available right now.

It’s easy to grip and hold in your hands, and the matte black plastic back makes it all the more grippier. The quality of the construction of the device is evident in its build – there’s no obvious gaps anywhere in the device, and at first glance you’d think that it had a unibody construction and a non-removable back. Of course it doesn’t – the matte black back plate of the Cosmos Z2 tears away easily, revealing the dual-SIM slots (one micro, the other regular) microSD slot and the 2000mAh battery.

The performance of the Cosmos Z2 is still zippy and fast, with the device only having a faint hint of lag during transitions and navigation.

One thing that did strike us odd though is that the device’s AnTuTu score has gone down around 5,000 points since we last used it, coming in only at 20002 for our review unit versus the 25742 points that the device in the official launch achieved. It’s an odd thing for sure, since the specs of the device hasn’t changed since it was launched in February, though AnTuTu has received numerous updates since then, which may explain the discrepancy in the scores.

Even though its AnTuTu scores may have gone down, the performance of the Cosmos Z2 remains the same – it’s still pretty quick and zippy, which translated to a pleasant experience when it came to zombie killing in Dead Trigger 2. We’ll keep an eye out on the Z2’s overall performance as we use it during our tests. We’ll also be keeping a close eye on the Cosmos Z2’s battery life, a major point of contention for a lot of our readers when we wrote about the device a month before.

That’s it for now. Expect the full review next week.
