Personal Encounter with the Cherry Mobile Omega HD 2X!

Earlier this December Cherry Mobile announced two new mega phablets: the Cherry Mobile Omega HD 2X and the Cherry Mobile Omega XL. The Cherry Mobile Omega HD 2X turned out to be their newest phablet flagship offering with highly competitive specifications coupled with aggressive pricing. For Php12,399, people can now get a turbo quad-core 5.7-inch Full HD OGS IPS Android Jelly Bean phablet! Not bad right?

The good folks from Cherry Mobile sent us a review unit to play around with. We’ll do a full review but for now we’d like to share our unboxing. To kick things off let’s review the complete specifications of the Omega HD 2x!

Unboxing and Packaging

Cherry Mobile Omega HD 2x

Cherry Mobile finally dropped the packaging of the Cosmos series (we hated the boxes of those phones) and returned to their hard carton boxes. The Cherry Mobile Omega HD 2X came in a gradient black-gray hard carton box which looked really slick and awesome. We also liked it how they made the “HD 2X” in the cover color red since it got more emphasis and “power”.

We pulled out the inner compartment and were greeted by the massive 5.7-inch Cherry Mobile Omega HD 2x! It definitely looked imposing at first but we got a better appreciation for it once we picked it up and saw how thin and smooth the device was. It might be big but it’s not necessarily “bulky” or heavy.

Other than the phone, we found the usual stuff in the compartment underneath it. There’s the wall charger, USB to micro USB cable, earphones, quick start guide, and manuals. By the way, we’re not 100% sure but we think that the phone has a screen protector already applied to the display.

Initial Impressions

The Omega HD 2X is definitely a phablet through and through given the 5.7-inch display. It’s hard to use with just one hand (unless your a Basketball player with big hands and long fingers). Of course the trade off for the bigger display is that you get a much better viewing and media consumption experience thanks to the spacious area for your content.

Speaking of display, the Full HD IPS OGS display is absolutely stunning! Images, icons, text, and videos all were superb on the screen of the Omega HD 2x. We also barely felt any lag in our initial tests which goes to show that for Full HD you really need more than just the turbo quad-core processor for a smooth Android experience. You need at least 2GB of RAM to go with it!

At the back we have the removable back plate. It almost feels rubbery and we’re not actually fans of it. We found that the back plate got dirty and marks fairly quickly as you’ll see in the photo below.

Everything considered, the Cherry Mobile Omega HD 2x gave us a nice first taste of what it could potentially do. First impressions? It passes with flying colors.
