Cherry Mobile Preparing to Launch Another Budget Ball Buster Smartphone?

Cherry Mobile has started to rollout ads in various spots in malls teasing “MAIA: A New Generation of Power is Coming”. While this can mean a lot of things we agree with the assessment of our friends over at HungryGeeks that this might be the first Intel SoFIA powered smartphone to hit the PH market. To those who don’t know what SoFIA is, it’s a low-cost processor that Intel created to challenge the low end chipsets of Qualcomm and Mediatek. It was announced last year (2014) and Intel featured it under a different name during the Mobile World Congress earlier this year. It’s now called the Intel Atom X3 Processor Series, an integrated communication platform that features a low-cost SoC with a 64-bit Intel Atom Processor (can do both LTE and 3G).

So what does this mean for the average Pinoy consumer? It means that we will now have 3 chipset manufacturers who are focused on delivering better performance and features at the least price possible. Before it used to be mostly just Qualcomm duking it out with MediaTek. Now Intel is throwing their hat into the table and it looks like they’re really going all-in here with the investments they’ve been making.

If you’re having doubts about Intel’s capabilities to make really good smartphone chipsets, all you have to do is to take a look at the ASUS ZenFone series. All of the smartphones there, especially the ZenFone 5 and the ZenFone 2, delivered in a big way for ASUS and Intel. They’ve climbed up the smartphone rankings all over Asia pretty fast which is a testament not just to the capabilities of ASUS, but of Intel as well.

We will be reaching out to Cherry Mobile tomorrow for comments on this story and we’ll get back to you guys as soon as we get more information.
