Ekonic Justice League Limited Edition Phone Unboxing, Quick Review: One for the DC Fans

Sweet swag for the die-hard DC fan

While the hype train for the Justice League movie gathers steam, it’s not surprising that DC Merchandise for the motley crew of heroes start appearing on the horizon. What is surprising is the source, at least for the official DC-licensed Justice League smartphone. Ekotek, a brand that we all know and love in the Philippines, has teamed up with DC via their sister company Ekonic to offer the first ever Justice League smartphone in the world. While it’s not the fastest phone that you can pick up today, it’s an irresistible piece of merch for Justice League fans here in the Philippines.

Packaging and contents:

Ekotek is positioning the Justice League smartphone as a legit DC collectible, and it’s not surprising then that they’ve gone all out in the packaging and presentation of the product when it appears on the shelves. The phone comes in a rather large box, with some pretty bitchin’ artwork on the front to catch your attention.

Once you open the box, you’ll see a bunch of stickers of different DC characters, as well as a certificate of authenticity for the phone.

There’s Flash-themed headphones in the box, as well as a charger and USB cable.

Ekotek also includes three additional back covers for the phone that you can swap out if you get tired with the original one depicting the entire crew of the Justice League, as well as a clear hard cover to keep everything nice and protected.

Initial impressions: it looks great, but don’t expect it to be the fastest one around

The Justice League phone looks pretty sweet when you see it up close and personal. The back of the phone sports some great artwork depicting the League which you can switch out to Batman, the Flash and Superman if you get tired of looking at the crew.

Since the back of the phone is removable, you get two SIM slots and a microSD slot, as well as a removable battery. We don’t know yet if Ekotek will offer additional batteries for this phone, which might be necessary since it only has 2500mAh worth of juice inside.

The physical controls are on the right side of the phone, while the USB port and 3.5mm jack is on the top.

Up front is the 5.5-inch full HD IPS display that already comes with a tempered glass protector pre-applied. The phone uses thick bezels on the bottom, which houses the physical Android navigation keys.

The phone feels solid enough, but since it uses removable back covers it’s not as premium-feeling as the other unibody metal devices we’ve used in the past.

Inside the phone beats a MediaTek MT6737 quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of expandable storage as well as LTE capability that’s 700MHz ready. More tech-inclined folks out there will note that the hardware configuration is more akin to a mid-level budget phone than a premium mid-range device. It’ll handle most apps fine but apps and games that require a lot of processing power will falter if you try to run it on this phone.

The device feels more like a phone aimed at hardcore DC fans than a phone for the mass market. With only 5000 made initially, it’s going to be a hot ticket item for DC fans who like to collect official merchandise as a hobby. If you’re interested in picking one up, you can only get it via Smart post-paid – simply add Php 400 to your plan for 30 months.
