Everything You Need in One Gadget?

A few weeks ago we were invited to the launch of a new technology brand in the Philippines called Evoluzn. Their first batch of products included two Android tablets called the 7V and the 8P. Among the two the one that caught our attention was the Evoluzn 8P. Not only were the specifications and features competitive, it also had an aluminum back giving it a very premium look and feel!

The great news is that the good folks from Evoluzn sent us a review unit of their new tablet. We’ll kick things off with the unboxing and follow it through with the full review after a week. For now let’s quickly go over the complete specifications.

Evoluzn 8P Spec Sheet

  • 1.2GHz Quad-core Processor
  • 1GB RAM
  • 8GB Internal Storage, Expandable via MicroSD Card
  • 7.85-inches IPS Display, 1024 x 768 resolution
  • 5.0-megapixels primary camera with autofocus and flash
  • 2.0-megapixels secondary camera
  • Dual 3G SIM, Dual Standby
  • 3G, HSPA+, WiFi, WiFi Hotspot, FM Radio, Bluetooth, GPS, Miracast
  • USB OTG
  • Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2
  • 5,000mAh Battery
  • SRP: Php8,990

As you can see, they packed it with tons of features! The only drawback we’re seeing is the resolution but if you can get past that then this is actually really good value for money. Anyway, let’s jump into the unboxing!

Packaging and Unboxing

Evoluzn 8P a

The Evoluzn 8P comes in an unassuming white carton box. They definitely have to improve more on their branding and packaging, hehe. It just looks plain even with the tablet with floating icon design. They should probably put a bold statement somewhere here so that potential customers get drawn to it when they see it on store shelves and displays.

We pulled out the slip-on carton cover and popped open the lid of the white box. We were instantly greeted by the Evoluzn 8P tablet wrapped messily in plastic. We picked it up, got a feel for it, and then set it down.

Other than the tablet, we found the usual accessories inside: earphones, micro USB to USB cable, wall charger, user manual (very detailed), and a USB OTG cable (yay). Nice freebie… thanks Evoluzn!

There’s definitely a lot of room for improvement with the design of the box but when it comes to what’s inside it’s pretty solid. Two thumbs up!

Initial Impressions

The highlight of the hardware, other than the 7.85-inch form factor, is the aluminum back. The Evoluzn 8P looks and feels amazing! The metal back just feels cool to the touch and gives you a very reassuring feeling that what you bought is made from high quality materials and it’s also sturdy.

Along the sides we have the volume rocker and power lock covered with a black glossy ceramic coating. At the top we have the audio jack, micro USB to USB port, and a mini HDMI port. The plastic plate at the top is actually removable and this is where you’ll find the lots for the SIM and micro SD cards.

In terms of software we’re a bit stumped. Evoluzn didn’t install the tablet Android software in it. They installed the smartphone Android software. As such it functions like a big smartphone and an Android tablet. We honestly don’t know if this was a mistake but it feels much more smoother and fluid since it uses the smartphone Android Jelly Bean version and not the laggy Android variant.

Over-all performance was quite impressive. Rarely any lags or sluggish moments.

We’ll put the Evoluzn 8P through the paces so that we can really see if this is worth our hard earned cash. Expect the full review out in a week or two. It might take longer than usual as we have a pretty long que of gadgets up for review right now.

The Evoluzn 8P is now out in Memo Express stores nationwide with an SRP of Php8,990.
