Hits and Misses of the ASUS PH Pricing of the ZenFone 4 Series

Hits and Misses of the ASUS PH Pricing of the ZenFone 4 Series

ASUS Zenfone 4 series prices were announced for the Philippines yesterday

Thoughts on the ASUS ZenFone 4 Line-up Pricing

Yesterday ASUS Philippines announced the Philippines suggested retail price of the ASUS ZenFone 4 line-up. To recap, here are all the models that they released for the Philippines with their corresponding SRP:

ASUS ZenFone 4 Max 5.5-inch: Php 9,995
ASUS ZenFone Selfie: Php 13,995
ASUS ZenFone Selfie Pro: Php 18,995
ASUS ZenFone 4: Php 28,995
ASUS ZenFone 4 Pro: Php 39,995

There is definitely a story with regards to the pricing of all the handsets. Here’s our take on it.

The ASUS ZenFone 4 Pro is Overpriced

The ASUS ZenFone 4 Pro is without a doubt a beautiful device. However the specs are just lacking given the top tier price tag. For Php39,995 it doesn’t have water and dust resistance and it only packs a 1920 x 1280 display.

The global price of the ZenFone 4 Pro was pegged at $599 or roughly Php31,000. Selling it at Php39,995 is a bit preposterous given the amount of competition it faces from the likes of Samsung, LG, Apple, and Huawei.

The ZenFone 4 Max and ZenFone 4 Selfie are Competitive

Zenfone 4 Max. Homerun here.

The real hero of this entire line-up is the ASUS ZenFone 4 Max. It followed the global SRP and was priced locally at just Php9,995. While it only packs an HD display, it does have respectable innards (Snapdragon 430 combined with 3GB RAM), dual-camera shooters at the back, a good selfie camera, and a monstrous 5,000mAh battery pack. It’s fantastic value for money for a smartphone below Php10,000. We’re currently working on our full review for this phone so stay glued to this space for that in a few days.

Another competitive offering is the ASUS ZenFone 4 Selfie. The main feature here is that it packs dual front-facing cameras: 20-megapixel main front camera and a 8-megapixel secondary front camera. The processor is the same as the one the ZenFone 4 Max is packing though so you’re really paying a premium for the dual front camera set-up. It’s still competitive when pegged against most devices in this price range.

When ASUS PH Follows the Global SRP, they Win

Ultimately ASUS Philippines has very competitive products when they follow their global pricing. The moment they go higher, their competitiveness suffers dramatically. We wouldn’t recommend buying the ZenFone 4 Pro and even the ZenFone 4 is a hard choice given the LG G6 being priced at just Php29,990. The ones we’re excited to review and give you guys our opinion on are really the ZenFone 4 Max, ZenFone 4 Selfie, and the ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro.

Just a random last thought to ASUS executives that might be reading this post. If the reason you need to price the top tier devices high is because of retailers and distributor margins, we suggest you just drop your retailers and sell them as digital exclusives on your website or Lazada and price them faithfully to the global SRP.
