A new processor to power mid-range smartphones

Just like last year MediaTek has officially announced a brand new processor for the mid-range market. Last year it was their Helio P10, today it’s the Helio P20. The new processor has a number of improvements from last years model, which includes a move to a smaller 16nm FinFET manufacturing process that improves power efficiency.

  • CPU: 4x Cortex A53 + 4x Cortex A53 @2.3GHz
  • GPU: Mali-T880MP2 @ 900MHz
  • Memory: 2x 32-bit @1600MHz LPDDR4X, 25.6GB/s or 1x 32-bit @ 933 LPDDR3, 7.4GB/s
  • Manufacturing Process: 16nm FinFet

The new chip uses an octa-core setup with two four-core Cortex A53 processors, with a higher core running at 2.3GHz, up from 2.0GHz from the previous model. The new SoC also has a new memory controller that supports LPDDR4X memory, which is more power efficient than the previous model.

The GPU of the new chip is more powerful than the previous model, and is now a Mali T880MP2 running at 900MHz. The processor can now support a single 24-megapixel rear camera or a 13-megapixel dual rear camera setup, and has LTE Cat. 6 capabilities, and overall the chip is expected to deliver outstanding power efficiency.

Devices with the new processor should pop up in the second half of 2016.
