Will affordable LTE phones start flooding the market?

MediaTek, the Taiwanese processor manufacturer that has always been the go-to company for local brands, has announced their latest SOC, the MT6595 with 4G LTE on board. According to the company, the MT6595 employs ARM’s big.LITTLE architecture, combined with their CorePilot technology, which is poised to deliver superior power management and multitasking performance.

So what can you expect from the new chip? Well, for one, it’s an octa-core chip, and based on the performance of devices that have their previous generation octa-core chip, you can bet that the performance of the MT6595 will be at least equal, if not better than their current solution. It’s also the company’s first ever SOC that has LTE solution on board, so you can definitely expect devices from local brands in the next few months to sport octa-core processors and LTE in an affordable pricepoint. The MT6595 also supports 802.11ac, GPS, GLONASS, Galileo and QZSS, as well as Bluetooth LE and ANT+, necessary for wearable fitness trackers.

MediaTek expects new devices powered by the MT6595 to appear by the second half of the year.
