Microsoft finally sees the light

One of the most exciting news out of Microsoft’s BUILD conference the other day wasn’t about a new phone or tablet. No, the most exciting piece of news is that Microsoft is finally making Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 free for devices that are smaller than 9 inches. Yes – Microsoft has finally decided to give up on its old business model, joining both Google and Apple in the 21st century.

This now means that any manufacturer is free to use Microsoft’s OS on any device they make, though they’re still not allowed to modify it in any way unlike Android since Windows isn’t open source. Still, this is a positive move for a company that has struggled to compete against the juggernaut that is Google (and to some extent Apple). There’s also a distinct possiblity that a local brand may just make a Windows powered device in the near future. Windows Phone 8 on a Cherry Mobile, MyPhone or Starmobile phone? What do you think?
