Nokia Lumia Phones Will Get A Crucial System Update in the Form of the Cyan Update!

Listen up Lumia users, your Nokia Lumia phones are about to get a nifty upgrade. That’s right, the Lumia Cyan update is upon us. What’s in it? These are the major highlights:

More Screen Real Estate

More columns mean more choices for customization.

Adding a third customizable column to your phone real estate expands the personality of your phone by putting more of the things that matter to you on your start screen. Aside from this, the Cyan update lets you personalize your phone even further by allowing background images to be used as your whole start screen.

Use your photos as your live tile's background image.

This means the live tiles will turn transparent so you can see the whole image clearly. You can also set which tiles become transparent and which one stays, well, blocky. At the end, it truly pushes the idea of customization and personalization to its users.

Action Center

The Action Center is one of the things that people are truly excited for. In a nutshell,  the Action Center is a quick-access menu that can house all your essential settings – everything from turning/ choosing connectivity, turning airplane mode on/off, screen locking your phone so it won’t change display orientation (useful when you’re browsing in bed) and more. Since this is customizable as well, you can choose which actions to put and/or drop in your Action Center.

Easier Camera UI

According to the press release, the Nokia Lumia Cyan update will vastly improve the already powerful Nokia Camera, Creative Studio and Storyteller App. They changed the UI to make it faster and much easier to use, something that I’m not entirely sure I’m happy hearing. I have always loved the amount of customization that you can do with the Nokia Camera and how it feels more like a DSLR than a random camera phone app. Still, I believe that Microsoft knows what it is doing and with how they’re very particular about phone imaging, I’m sure they have taken into account those that extensively use the Nokia Camera slider and those that prefer the simplicity of a point-and-click.

Clearer Audio Recording

At least for the Nokia Lumia 1520 and the Lumia Icon, the audio recording of these devices will get a massive update. According to the press article, the audio quality of videos taken with these smartphones will be even more true-to-life thanks to Nokia Rich Recording and Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 sound. And the camera capabilities will be even more robust (e.g. improved colors and low-light performance, continuous autofocus and improvements to RAW DNG images) and real thanks to the Living Images feature.

Word Flow

But the one thing that Lumia users are waiting to get their hands on is the Word Flow function making typing with your on-screen keyboard easier and faster. It’s touted as the world’s most intuitive smartphone keyboard out there. The idea is that you glide your finger across the screen and Lumia’s AI will closely predict the word that you’re trying to type. The function also self-learns so the more you use it, the lesser the error. No more annoying autocorrect, right iOS users? 😉

Woshoo! Woshoo! Woshoo!

Currently, the update is slowly being rolled out to various Lumia devices nationwide and while Lumia updates are detected automatically by your phone you can try your luck and manually check your system as well by going to settings -> phone updates -> check phone updates. Or if you don’t want to keep hitting the refresh button like a crack addict, you can simply check this list to see if your device is ready to be upgraded: http://www.nokia.com/global/support/software-update/wp8-software-update/wp8-availability-in-asia-pacific/

To know more about it here’s Nokia’s Adam Giles do a hands-on video of the features.
