OPPO, Vivo, and other Brands Should Declare Which Devices Get Oreo

Which Devices Get Oreo?

Android 8.0 “Oreo” was officially announced by Google yesterday. The update has a lot of interesting features on the user interface/experience side as well as system optimizations that should extend battery life. That said, manufacturers need to be transparent as to which of their devices will get the latest Android update. There was already an initial list that was leaked out and it covered a lot of the global brands: ASUS, Acer, Google, Huawei, HTC, Lenovo, LG, Motorola, Nokia, OnePlus, Samsung, Sony, and Xiaomi. Take note that this is unofficial and partial. There are two popular brands here in the Philippines that aren’t on the list though: OPPO and Vivo.

Software updates are critical because they bring a lot of new features to devices of consumers. It’s a key part of the over-all smartphone experience and it would be unfortunate if users don’t get it because of limitations by manufacturers. This lack of software updates has been the bane of local brands such as Cherry Mobile, Starmobile, and MyPhone.

OPPO and Vivo need to quickly declare which units they are currently offering will receive Android 8.0 “Oreo” so that they don’t fall into that bucket. It’s difficult for us to recommend any product these days that won’t get software updates, especially as big as Android 8.0 Oreo. This is even more true for the mid-range segment that OPPO and Vivo are playing in, which is fiercely competitive with ASUS, Huawei, LG, and Samsung in the mix.

For example if you take a look at the partial, leaked, and unofficial list of smartphones slated to get Oreo, the following devices are there:

  • Asus ZenFone 4 (ZE554KL)
  • Asus ZenFone Pro (ZS551KL)
  • Asus ZenFone 4 Max (ZC520KL)
  • Asus ZenFone 4 Max Pro (ZC554KL)
  • Asus ZenFone 4 Selfie (ZD553KL)
  • Asus ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro (ZD552KL)
