One of the most interesting products that Samsung unveiled during CES was their upsized Galaxy Note tablet, the Galaxy Note PRO 12.2. Its the biggest tablet in the Note line, coming in at 12.2 inches, and carries the best components ever assembled in a Samsung tablet. Today, we managed to get an Exynos, WiFi only version of the Note PRO 12.2 for review.

Initial impressions: Elegant and classy on the outside, a beast on the inside

Because the Galaxy Note PRO 12.2 sits on the top-end of Samsung’s tablet offerings, there was no denying that the Korean company would not spare any expense when it comes to the materials used in creating the externals of the device.

The Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 uses a combination of plastic and leather in its construction, similar to the Galaxy Note 3. The device is surrounded by a metallic trim on the side, while a leather finish adorns the back of the PRO 12.2, similar to the one on the Note 3.

The leather back makes the PRO 12.2 extremely pleasant to hold and use. Twin speakers are located on both sides of the PRO 12.2, while Samsung’s patented S-Pen is located on the upper right side of the leather back.

The 12.2-inch display on the Note PRO 12.2 is one of the sharpest we’ve ever seen, thanks to its 2560 X 1600 resolution.

While the WiFi version of the Note PRO 12.2 only uses Samsung’s Exynos Octa processor instead of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800, the 3GB of RAM inside the Note PRO makes all the difference, pushing the Note PRO’s score all the way to 34406 points. It’s not surprising then that using the Note PRO 12.2 is an exceedingly pleasant experience, as we rarely felt any lag during our (brief) time with it.

While the Note PRO 12.2 uses Samsung’s tried and tested TouchWiz overaly, it also has Samsung’s newly developed, Flipboard-like Magazine UX. Using Magazine UX is easy enough, and the feeds are customizable, though we’re still not entirely convinced of its practical use for now. The Note PRO 12.2 also comes with KitKat (Android 4.4) already installed.

The Note PRO 12.2 is capable of doing all the tricks that the Note 3 is capable of, including all the S-Pen functionality that made the Note 3 great.

That’s it for now, expect the full review later this week!
