Samsung Supposedly Developing Their Own 1000 FPS Camera Sensor

It’s going to go head-to-head with Sony’s own offering

One of Sony’s main advantages over its competitors is its unique 3-layer stacked CMOS image sensor that has its own memory chip that allows it to take 1,000 FPS slow-mo video. The Motion Eye technology is a great selling point for the Xperia XZ Premium, XZs and the XZ1, though their innovation won’t stay unchallenged for long.

Samsung is reportedly making their own ultra-fast 1000FPS camera sensor to go against Sony’s offering, though they’re taking a slightly different path – Samsung’s approach uses a traditional two-layer chip with a bonded DRAM chip to avoid infringing on Sony’s 3 layer approach.

The Korean company will reportedly use the new camera chip on its next-generation Galaxy S9 smartphones set to be revealed next year. If the rumors prove true, Samsung will have a distinct advantage over Sony since they’re able to produce both sensor and chip, unlike the Japanese company which depends on another partner to deliver the RAM necessary to make their Motion Eye tech work.
