Spotted: Budget Dual-core Android Jelly Bean Smartphone with 1GB RAM

Each time a local company releases a new smartphone most pinoy techies complain about the 512MB RAM. They have the right to do so since 512MB RAM sometimes isn’t enough for devices running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, especially if they’re not optimized properly. The holy grail of budget devices is a smartphone that has a dual-core processor, Android Jelly Bean, a decent camera, 1GB RAM, and priced competitively. Most people thought this was impossible but we can finally confirm that we might be seeing this sooner than we think!

The photo above is a flyer we picked up here in Bangkok, Thailand from a company called i-mobile and it features their “IQ” smartphone product line. Check out the IQ6.

The price the cashier quoted us was around 8,500 Bhat which comes out to around Php11,500-Php11,700. At that price though they’re coming dangerously close to another budget contender, the Meizu MX 4-core. Priced at Php13,790 from Widget City you already get a quad-core Android smartphone, 1GB RAM, 8MP camera, and Android 4.0 ICS. While the Meizu has the quad-core processor, the IQ6 has the 12-megapixel shooter with BSI, a bigger screen, and Android Jelly Bean 4.1 out of the box.

Anyway, we just wanted to share this to give hope to the people thinking that they’ll never see a budget-friendly dual-core Jelly Bean ‘Droid with 1GB RAM. Personally I think the 11k price tag is justifiable, especially with the better camera and RAM upgrade. Of course we won’t know for sure until we actually review it so until then we can only speculate based on the numbers.

The race is on in the Philippines for the first local brand to bring an affordable dual-core, Jelly Bean touting smartphone with 1GB RAM! Let’s wait and see which brand it will be. 😀

PS: There’s already a dual-core Android smartphone with 1GB RAM but it only has Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. If you want that one check out the Kata i1. We’re going to feature it on Unbox soon. 🙂
