Meet the Starmobile Play!

Starmobile is a company that is on a roll. After releasing their extremely solid octa-core offering the Diamond X1, the local brand has managed to pique our interest with their newest budget offering, the Play. We usually don’t get excited with devices meant for the lowest end of the market, but judging by its specs and price, the Starmobile Play may be one of the best bang for your buck dual-core smartphone out in the market today.

Packaging and contents

The Play comes in Starmobile’s typical white and green packaging. There’s a photo on the front of the package that shows you the profile of the Play, while the back holds all the relevant information about the smartphone that lies within.

Initial impressions: Good all around design and build quality

Like most low-end devices, the Play is constructed mainly out of plastic. Our review unit sported a dark blue color that was pleasant to the eye. The Play has rounded corners and a contoured back, which makes it easy to grip the device in your hands. The plastic back has raised dimples on it, which makes the device grippier and subsequently, easier to hold than a device without them.

As far as build quality goes, the Play is solidly constructed, much more than previous devices in its class, which shows just how much the products of the local brands have matured.

Internally, the Play carries a 1.2GHz MediaTek dual-core processor, which is typical for its price point.

The Play managed to score 10736 points in AnTuTu, which isn’t bad at all, considering the fact that we’ve seen much more expensive devices score lower than the Play in AnTuTu.

The Play’s AnTuTu scores reflected on the performance of the device while we were using it. We did encounter lag here and there while navigating the device, but those moments were brief and fleeting, and we went away impressed at the device’s performance, considering the price point.

That’s it for this unboxing. You can expect that we will put the Starmobile Play through its paces including overall battery performance, image quality and so on.
