Is the Up Starmobile’s answer to the Rio?

MyPhone’s Rio has managed to stay the undisputed king of the sub-5K quad-core smartphone category ever since it was released a few months ago, but it seems a challenger has now appeared to take the crown. Starmobile has just detailed their newest smartphone, the Up in their website without much fanfare, which is a bit odd, since it looks like it has the chance to go toe-to-toe with the Rio.

Starmobile Up specs

  • 1.3Ghz quad-core MediaTek MT6582M processor
  • Mali 400MP- 2 GPU
  • 1GB of RAM
  • 5-inch scratch resistant FWVGA IPS display, 854×480 resolution
  • 4GB of storage, expandable via microSD up to 32GB
  • 8-megapixel BSI rear camera with flash and AF
  • 2-megapixel front camera with BSI
  • Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, OTG
  • Dual-SIM
  • 3G, HSPA+
  • 2000mAh battery
  • Android 4.4 KitKat
  • 146 x 73 x 9.99mm

While the Up doesn’t have the same display as the Rio, settling for a FWVGA display rather than a HD one, it makes up for that by possessing a scratch resistant display that we’re guessing is glass. The Up also comes with Android KitKat right out of the box, which is good since you won’t have to wait for OTA updates anymore. According to the product page in Starmobile, the Up will also have the ability to be woken up from sleep by just tapping on the screen, kinda like how the Knock On feature on LG’s smartphones. At just Php 4,990, it’s really obvious that the Up is Starmobile’s answer to the Rio, though only a full review will tell if it can wrest the crown of the sub-5K smartphone from their rival’s grasp.
