The Kodak Ektra Goes On Sale

A Camera Phone from a Legendary Brand

Late last year, we reported that the famous film company, Kodak, had been working on a smartphone with a primary focus on photography. The phone was called the Kodak Ektra and it boasts of a 21-megapixel rear camera with f/2.0 aperture, equipped with phase detection autofocus, 6-axis optical image stabilization, and is capable of shooting videos in 4K. While the specs for its main shooter are impressive on paper, the camera samples that the company shared were equally amazing as well.

We’ve been hearing close to nothing about Kodak’s smartphone project but, more than half a year later, the Ektra has finally hit the market via their website. Listed at $399.99, or Php 19929, the Kodak Ektra is cheaper than what other online publications had initially thought it would be priced; a pleasant surprise. Let’s have a look at its spec sheet as a refresher, because it has been awhile, hasn’t it?

Kodak Ektra Specifications

  • 2.3GHz Helio X20 Decacore Processor
  • 3GB of RAM
  • 5-inch Full HD Display; 1920×1080 Resolution
  • 32GB of storage; expandable via microSD card
  • 21-megapixel rear camera with Fast Focus Camera Sensor; f/2.0 aperture, PDAF, OIS, LED Flash
  • 13-megapixel front camera; f/2.0 aperture, PDAF
  • 3G, LTE
  • GPS, AGPS
  • Wi-Fi, Bluetooth
  • 3,000mAh Battery
  • Android 6.0 Marshmallow

In terms of aesthetics, the Ektra looks more like a very slim camera than it does a smartphone. We’re unsure about its build quality and the materials used but there’s a certain charm about it; though we do see a bit of a problem with the slight curve towards its chin that acts as a camera grip of sorts, not to mention the camera hump on this thing. As we expected, there is a dedicated camera button on its side for those who might not want to use the on-screen button for taking snaps and to help you launch the camera app quicker as well.

As for the image samples, if the ones below are straight from the phone, they look incredible.

Will we see the Kodak Ektra in Philippine stores? We’re not sure, but we will keep you posted if it does.
