What We Learned During a Weekend With MyPhone

We spent some time with MyPhone execs and other members of the media in Rancho Elena in Canlubang, Laguna for the first ever MyPhone BlogCon for bloggers. While it was mostly a thank you event for members of the press, we managed to get some facetime with MyPhone executives and talked a little bit about the brand’s efforts in the local marketplace. One of the most surprising things (or unsurprising, considering the economic makeup of the country) that we learned during the event according to John Luke Chika, MyPhone’s Marketing Head is that a majority of the phones sold by the company are still mostly feature phones. Given their estimate, it seems that the company is selling around 60 percent feature phones, while only 40 percent of their total sales are Android smartphones like the Rio. Even though we live in an age of Android, it seems that the market is still hungry for phones that do nothing more than call and text (and maybe play music).

We’ve always wondered just how the company managed to gain a reputation among the local brands of having tough, long lasting phones. After talking to Richard De Quina, MyPhone’s VP For Marketing, it became obvious that it was a deliberate decision on the part of the company. He told us that they’ve always made a conscious effort into getting phones from partners that were not only affordable, but were also tough and had quality internals. According to him MyPhone brags a return rate of 2.5%, which is probably the lowest in the industry, certainly an impressive number from a local brand. It’s this commitment to quality that has earned MyPhone a reputation for offering tough, solid phones that last – there are many customer testimonials on the brand’s page that proves that, and we’re hoping that it doesn’t stop.

As for the future, the brand is promising more big things. They will be launching more phones in the near future, and hopefully we’ll be seeing another coup from them much like what they’ve managed to achieve with the Rio.
