Can MediaTek finally one-up Qualcomm in performance?

There have been rumors of MediaTek’s upcoming beast of a processor, dubbed the Helio X30, and its possibility of dethroning Qualcomm’s current top-of-the-line chip, the Snapdragon 820 in performance. Today, analyst Pan Jiutang is claiming that the Helio X30 is capable of beating Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 in performance, at least in AnTuTu.

The Helio X30 has a pair of 2.8GHz Artemis cores, four 2.2GHz Cortex-A53 cores and four 2.0GHz Cortex-A35 cores. That’s paired with a PowerVR 7XT GPU, and the new SoC will reportedly be able to handle a dual-camera setup, 26-megapixel rear camera, VR connections, LTE Cat 13 and up to 8GB of RAM.

As far as AnTuTu tests, Jiutang says that the Helio X30 SoC scored 160,000 points, with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 SoC trailing at 130,000 points.

Obviously, until we have an official announcement from MediaTek and actual AnTuTu results, take all of this information with a grain of salt. That being said, MediaTek being able to beat Qualcomm in performance would be quite an upset, given that Qualcomm’s chips have been positioned as the more premium choice, used by top-tier manufacturers around the world.
