The Inbox: 5 Smartphone Apps that We’ve Been Using a Lot Lately

Katrina wrote us via our Facebook Page asking:

Hi po! Pwede po malaman ano mga apps lagi niyo gamit? Tnx!!!

We actually have a list of staple apps that we download each time we have a new smartphone that we’re testing or using. This includes MX Player Pro, Power Amp, and the usual full suite of social media applications. Other than the usual suspects though we’ve noticed that we’ve been spending a considerable amount of time using some new apps. We’d like to quickly take you through them below. They’re a mix of games, entertainment, and utility applications.

Marvel Future Fight

Highly addictive and fun game! Must have for Marvel fans.

This is probably the app that’s we’ve logged in the most number of hours in the last month! We only discovered this game recently and ever since installing it on our ZenFone 2 we’ve been playing it non-stop. It’s the best Marvel RPG game we’ve ever played on the mobile platform. The fast-paced gameplay can get repetitive but the updates keep on coming and it’s always a new experience when you unlock a new Marvel character. Our favorite team-up right now is Captain America – Winter Soldier – Falcon.

iFlix

Fantastic library of video content

When we first heard of video streaming services like iFlix we weren’t really too excited. The current habit is to just download anything and everything that you want to watch. However the convenience of not having to wait for hours before your torrent finishes turned out to be a great selling point for apps like this. It also doesn’t hurt that iFlix has a pretty solid library of content from movies to TV shows! We’ve been binging on a lot of episodes of Friends lately.

By the way, they recently updated the app so that it can stream wirelessly to your TV via Chromecast. Ever since they did this we’ve been watching mostly on our big TV in the living room. Hopefully they founders keep updating the app so we keep on getting more useful features like this in the future.

Clash of Clans

Currently level 101 at TH 9 going to TH 10! And yes… we will confess that we’ve actually bought gems via our credit card. Argh.

GrabCar / Uber

Travel app of choice
Travel app of choice

We’ve been huge fans of both GrabCar and Uber ever since both services launched in the Philippines. Lately though we found ourselves using GrabCar a lot more than actually bringing our car with us when we leave the house or the office. The convenience of not having to look for parking anymore and just having someone drive you is to compelling. Not having to wait in line or wait for a cab to pass by is obviously also a major draw for both services.

We love this so much that we’ve been thinking of buying a VIOS or 2 so that we could have our own GrabCar business. After all the founder of the app said that most of their drivers earn Php70,000 monthly. Wowza.

Google Newsstand

google newsstand unbox

And last, but definitely not the least, we have Google Newsstand. This is our reader app of choice. The clean and intuitive user interface is the main reason why we shifted from Flipboard and Pulse to this one. We follow our favorite blogs, websites, and YouTube via this app and we make it a point to check it out and browse through it at least once a day.

Oh, if you haven’t yet, please do follow the official Unbox account on Newsstand. Easy access to all of our content on your mobile devices.

And those are 5 of the apps that we’ve been using a whole lot lately. How about you guys? What are the 5 top apps you’ve been using on your smartphone the last few weeks? Please do share them with us via the comments section below. Looking forward to hearing from all of you!
