Samsung made great strides with its Gear S2 wearable, offering an elegant design coupled with a convenient, easy to use rotating bezel. The Korean company is building on that momentum with their new Gear S3 that they just announced in IFA, which increases the size of the smartwatch, and subsequently, it’s overall battery life.

Before we get into that, let’s take a look at the improvements first. There’s two versions of the Gear S3 – the Classic and the Frontier. The Classic sticks to the same design formula that the Gear S2 had, made from a 316L stainless steel. The Frontier, on the other hand, is the more rugged looking one, sporting hour and minute marks on the rotating bezel, with knurling on the back and home button. Both versions of the Gear S3 is substantially bigger than the previous iteration physically, despite having almost the same screensize – 1.3-inches round compared to the 1.2-inches in the Gear S2. What’s different this time around is the glass protection – both versions sport Corning’s Gorilla Glas SR+, a new type of glass protection specifically made for wearables.

Both wearables also have the same IP68 water resistance, and both have Samsung’s dual-core Exynos chips powering them along with 768MB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage, GPS radioes and a bigger 380mAh battery. The only difference between the two is that the Frontier has LTE connectivity while the Classic does not.

That look may not be for everybody though. Like we said, the Gear S3 is substantially bigger than the Gear S2, bearing bodies that are 46mm wide. That size is usually associated with men’s watches – women may not like the bigger size of the new wearables.

No pricing has been set as of yet for the new smartwatches.
