We unbox the MyPhone my35!

Along with the my36, MyPhone also handed us their new my35 smartphone to unbox and review in the next few days. At just Php 6,888, the my35 is priced pretty closely to the company’s my36, with the latter going for just Php 100 more over the former. The my35 does bring a couple of unique things to the table that the my36 lacks, which we’ll be talking about in this unboxing. Speaking of which, let’s begin:

MyPhone my35 specs:

  • 1.3GHz 64-bit octa-core processor
  • 3GB of RAM
  • 5-inch HD IPS display, 1280 x 720 resolution
  • 16GB of storage, expandable via microSD
  • 13-megapixel rear camera, Samsung sensor, phase detection AF, LED flash
  • 5-megapixel front camera
  • Dual-SIM
  • 3G, LTE
  • WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, A-GPS, Hi-fi audio
  • Android 5.1 Lollipop
  • 3140mAh battery

Packaging and contents:

The packaging for the my35 isn’t quite as plush compared to its slightly more expensive brother. The my35 comes in a smaller albeit thicker box, which clearly advertises that the phone comes with the same commemorative watch that we saw in our unboxing of the my36.

There’s also a sticker on the front that proudly proclaims that the my35 comes with a free SIM card that has free internet for 1 year, though there is fine print that says you’re getting 100MB for 15 days a month for 12 months. Since our unit didn’t come with said SIM card, we can’t comment if the SIM is Smart or Globe.

Anyway, inside the box you’ll see the same accessories that the my36 came with: headphones, USB cable and USB charger, as well as the warranty card and documentation for the phone.

Initial impressions: another good looking phone from MyPhone, this time with HiFi audio

With their revamped my line MyPhone has managed to put out not just one, but two handsome phones. The my35 has a few key design differences compared to its slightly bigger and more expensive brother. For one, the my35 does not have a 2.5D curved glass and settles for a normal 5-inch, HD IPS display. The my35 also has physical capacitive Android navigation keys on the bottom of the device.

The volume rocker is located on the left of the phone, while the power button is on the right. Both the 3.5mm jack and USB port are on the top of the phone.

The phone sports a rounded grey plastic frame that makes it look a little like Sony’s Xperia Z3 smartphone. Flip the phone over, and you’ll see the gloss black back, along with the PH map. We’ve already discussed why MyPhone went back to this design for their phones, and for better or for worse that map is here to stay. Anyway, on the upper left side is the camera with the LED flash right below it.

You’re probably wondering where you put your SIM and microSD cards on the my35. That’s actually the clever bit – the my35’s glossy back is removable. The small slot that aids in the removal of the cover is hidden at the bottom of the phone. Once you take that out, you’ll see the two SIM card and single microSD slot, along with the non-removable battery.

The quality of construction of the my35’s back cover is superb – we spent a few minutes trying to figure out where the SIM and microSD slots were before we found the recess on the bottom. Good job there MyPhone.

Internally the my35 isn’t too different from the my36 – it uses MediaTek’s 1.3GHz MT6753 octa-core processor with 3GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. The big difference here is screen size – 5-inches to 5.2-inches – and resolution – HD compared to full HD. As such, the my35 scores a wee bit higher in AnTuTu. One major differentiator is HiFi audio, which MyPhone says the my35 has. We plugged in our favorite pair of headphones in the my35 to confirm. While Lil Dicky’s Save That Money sounded richer and better with the my35 compared to the my36, we’ll have to use the my35 for a few days to really see if the phone does deliver on its promise of HiFi audio.

The biggest issue that we have right now with the my35 is its price – while it’s a rather affordable phone at just Php 6,888, it’s too closely priced to the my36. There’s just a small price difference between the two (Php 111 in fact) and too big a specs gap. The my35’s bigger brother, the my36, has a full HD display, nicer 2.5D glass panel though it loses a bit on the battery capacity and lack of HiFi audio.

Anyway, that concludes our unboxing and first hands-on of the my35.
