Ran out of time?

It’s a few days before Christmas, but for some reason (work, traffic, divination of the gods) you weren’t able anything for the gadgeteer in your life this Christmas. You’re at a panic, you don’t know what to get him/her. Relax, calm down, and let us help you pick 5 last minute gifts that they would love to receive. Things like:

1. Bluetooth speakers

Bluetooth speakers are always a great fall back item when you need a no-brainer gift. Bluetooth speakers work with literally any device that has a Bluetooth connection, and even better – comes with a variety of price ranges. The Divoom Bluetune Solo, for instance, retails for only Php 2,500 so it’s great for people on a budget. The Braven 710 on the other hand, is a water resistant Bluetooth speaker that delivers quite a bit more sound but is a bit more expensive as well, at Php 7,450.

2. Powerbanks

If there’s one thing that unites smartphone owners, it’s running out of juice before the day ends, and usually before a dinner meeting or a date with your significant other. Powerbanks is a gift that almost everyone will appreciate, and like Bluetooth speakers they come in a wide variety of price ranges, features and functions. And while the temptation is great to cheap out on a Powerbank as a gift, try to get your significant someone at least a branded (not knockoff) Powerbank as shoddy, imitation ones have a tendency to catch fire.

3. Flipcovers, cases, screen protectors

While the smartphones that most companies make nowadays are better built to withstand the rigors of daily life, they’re still going to show a lot of wear and tear if you don’t protect them right. Few people would be unappreciative of extra flipcovers, cases and even tempered glass screen protectors for their precious phones – especially if said phones are pretty dang expensive.

4. MicroSD cards and external drives

Another great gift is storage media, specifically micrOSD cards and external drives. Like all the other items on this list, these things work regardless of what your device is. If you’re wondering what capacity microSD you should get, always remember bigger is better, though keep in mind there are some phones that have a limit on what capacity their microSD card slots can accomodate.

Another great gift suggestion is an external disk drive, preferably one that doesn’t require two USB cables to run. Some of these drives can be used in phones if they have USB OTG capability, though not all. While you’re at it, buy them USB OTG cables too – they’re fairly cheap and they allow people to connect game controllers and other peripherals to the phone, increasing their functionality.

5. Game controllers

If you have an avid mobile gamer in your life, there’s one thing he/she may appreciate more than anything – a game controller. There’s a lot of great games on Google Play nowadays, and a lot of them support being played with a game controller, either using Bluetooth or going through the USB OTG feature. Using a game controller while playing Android or iOS games that support it give players more precision and control, giving them an extra edge over their opponents especially if it’s a multiplayer game.

Like the other entries in this guide, there are a number of options available, from simple, cheap sub 1K controllers to more expensive things like the Moga Pro Power. Like anything, you get what you pay for, and we suggest that you don’t skimp out too much for the controller. You can also buy Dualshock3 controller for the PS3 and connect that via Bluetooth with your device, though you need to buy a Gameklip or a similar product if you want to game on the move.
