The tax (wo)man cometh

BIR Commisioner Kim Henares and the Bureau of Internal Revenue has filed tax evasion complaints against the operators of Ensogo and CashCash Pinoy today.

The charges were leveled against Ensogo Inc.’s president Krit Srivorakul and treasurer Xelynne de Lara for willful failure to remit taxes and deliberate failure to pay taxes from October 31, 2011 to October 31, 2014, amounting to around Php 36.1 million.

According to the BIR’s complaint, Ensogo and their corporate officers were charged because they failed to remit taxes and their failure to pay additional charges including witholding tax on compensation and VAT for three years, starting from October 31, 2011 to October 31, 2014.

At the same time, charges were also filed against Moonline Inc. which operates CashCash Pinoy, specifically against its president Frederic Elie Levy and treasurer Bernadette Levy for willful attempt to evade or defeat tax, and deliberate failure to supply correct and accurate information in its income tax returns (ITR) for taxable years 2011, 2012 and 2013. CashCash Pinoy’s tax liability amounts to a whopping Php 132.51 million, inclusive of surcharges and interests.

The two charges against the two biggest online shopping destinations in the Philippines send a clear message to people who do business online: pay the right taxes, or else.
