The options are now on the table

China Telecom has two options available to it if it ever wants to push through with its investment in the Philippines: become the third telco player or partner up with the two current telcos Globe or PLDT.

This is what Department of Information and Communications Technology Eliseo Rio said yesterday, during a Senate hearing on proposals to revise foreign ownership restrictions in public utilities.

“China Telecom will have to choose, third player or Globe or PLDT,” he said.

If China Telecom does choose the easier route of forging a joint venture with Globe and PLDT, it’ll have to surrender frequencies that has been allotted for the third player.

China Telecom isn’t the only telco that’s looking to enter the Philippines. PT&T has earlier said that it’s in advanced talks with a Korean company, while TierOne Comm International is said to be partnering with ZTE.

A representative from the United Nations special agency for Communications Technology will be in Manila next week to help the Philippine government in the selection process.
