Congress Approves Bill for ABS-CBN Provisional Franchise

Congress Approves Bill for ABS-CBN Provisional Franchise

The provisional franchise will be until October 2020

Several days after NTC issued a cease and desist order against ABS-CBN, the House of Representatives approved a bill granting ABS-CBN a provisional franchise until October 2020.

Cayetano explained that congress is focusing on the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, and that the approved bill will give them more time to tackle ABS-CBN’s application for a franchise renewal.

Under House Bill No. 6732, one of the statements read “We hope to strike a balance between the immediate needs of the people amid this crisis and the duty of Congress to ensure accountability to our present laws.”

“We cannot, in good conscience, sweep the accusations under the rug,” the bill’s explanatory note reads.

To date, ABS-CBN has been releasing press statements addressing accusations on alleged franchise violations and tax liabilities.
