Converge ICT Planning Nationwide Expansion

This is good news for the provinces!

Converge ICT has announced that they are now planning to roll-out their fiber services nationwide, and have formed a partnership with key infrastructure partners to facilitate their nationwide expansion. The company has announced partnerships with Korea Telecoms, LSI Fibernet Konstruk Corporation, and TE Connectivity Subcom to help Converge ICT to build the necessary infrastructure and backbone required.

Converge ICT builds and operates its own backbone for its customers in Manila and surrounding provinces, but for the company to completely cover the country it needs the expertise and assistance of key industry specialists.

“This is about extending our footprint to North Luzon and VisMin. And for that to happen we need to build our backbone. In the current industry structure it’s a little bit expensive to just rent. We also want to provide services, like for example we now operate a cable company in Naga. We want to be able to control the cost and quality of our service there, so we need to create a backbone. There’s still a huge untapped market in Visayas and Mindanao, and to do that without losing money we need to build our own backbone,” Jesus Romero, COO of Converge ICT said at the sidelines of the event.

As for the exact timeline when Converge ICT would finally be available in said areas, there’s no firm date yet. According to Romero, there’s many factors to consider for their expansion.

“Depends on what the parties will construct. Korea Telecom will build the Luzon backbone. They have to give us their commitment when they will finish, then we will know. There’s a submarine cable component as well. For Naga, that’s from Calabarzon to the end of Bicol, we’re hoping to finish that in January 2019.”

Romero also laid to rest the rumors of Converge ICT being the third telco in the Philippines.

“Kami kasi right now our focus is building out and expanding our fixed broadband business. We believe there’s a bigger market in providing fixed broadband for underserved customers,” he said.
