DITO Telecommunity is on track to commence commercial operations by March of 2021. This was revealed by Adel A. Tamano Chief Administrative Officer in an interview with ABS-CBN earlier today.
“Please don’t get the impression that we can easily do a commercial launch in a couple of weeks.
But right now, we are hoping to maybe launch a little bit earlier, but it won’t be very far from the March 2021 commercial launch date,” he said.
DITO Telecom has been hard at work the past few months, working through the challenges of the pandemic to erect cell towers that are the heart of any telco, and has finished construction of around 1,532 towers, which is enough for its 37% coverage requirement for its Technical Audit in January. The company said it’s targeting around 2000 towers at the end of this year which should amount to 47% to 49%, which brings them close to their next target of 51% for their July Technical Audit.
Other notable milestones for the company are 4 completed 5G calls in NCR, Southern Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, which may mean that the company will be rolling out 5G capability when they launch early next year.
Dito Telecom is looking to break up the long-established duopoly of both PLDT (and its main subsidiary Smart) and Globe. The company won the right to become the third telco back in 2018, partnering with state-owned China Telecom.
