Get Breathtaking Views of the Sky with “Windowless Planes”

I love traveling but I make it a point to get window seats, especially for long-haul flights because I hate the claustrophobic feeling of being cramped in a plane for hours.

It looks like in a decade or so, no one will have to fight for window seats anymore because passengers will get a panoramic view of the sky, regardless of where they are seated. The Center for Process Innovation, a British Technology research company, is working on “windowless planes”. Instead of that tiny box that gives us a glimpse of the outside, they plan to deck planes with OLED touchscreens that will be connected to cameras on the plane’s hull. This will give travelers the perfect view of their flight surroundings.

Right now, we know OLED technology because it is used on television screens, mobile phones, and desktop monitors. We are well aware of the amazing picture quality that it produces.  There’s no doubt that views from every virtual window seat will be breathtaking.

Is the bright, blue sky boring you? Passengers have the option of watching their favorite entertainment shows on the screen. Have concern regarding the flight? The touchscreen feature allows you to contact the flight attendants so they can help you out.

While the concept is pretty cool, it does have some disadvantages. To begin with, I can imagine the huge screen causing neck pain – something that you don’t want to contend with while traveling. There may also be privacy issues unless airlines can find a way to block fellow passengers from seeing what you’re playing on the screen. Of course, there’s also the fact that some people are afraid of heights and may not necessarily want to see what is happening outside.

On the flipside, the aircraft is said to be lighter than what’s being used now so it could fly faster while burning less fuel.

If everything goes as planned, “windowless planes” might be the future of flying – or at least passengers will have the option.  In fact, the first class cabin on the newest Boeing 777-300ER of Emirates is already equipped with this technology.  The goal is to have OLED screens for all passengers.

So what do you think? Are “windowless planes” a “yay” or a “nay”?
