Grab Looking To Get Uber’s SEA Operations

It’ll make them the biggest TNV in the country if it pushes through

Grab is looking to extend its dominance over the ride-sharing market in South East Asia and is allegedly in talks with Uber to acquire their SEA operations, according to a report.

Grab has enjoyed success in the region, with the company claiming a 95 percent market share in third-party taxi-hailing and 71 percent private vehicle hailing in SEA, as well as reaching a massive 1 billion ride milestone in the region.

While Uber has announced a 5 billion trip milestone last June, it did not give a breakdown of that particular milestone per country. With the company operating in 80 countries, it’s hard to see just how much of the market they have in the region.

Grab’s success in SEA is attributed to a number of factors, including flexible payment options (Uber did not offer cash payments at the start) and subsidized use of smartphones for many of its drivers.
