We go hands-on with Huawei’s newest flagship!
Huawei has finally pulled the wraps off their newest devices in the Mate series: the Huawei Mate 10 and the Huawei Mate 10 Pro. While the base model of the Mate 10 certainly has the same brains and the brawn, it’s the added beauty of the Mate 10 Pro that makes it more compelling. Now that we have the device in our hands, let’s take it out of the box and give it a quick go around. Before that, here’s another look at its spec sheet.

What’s in the Box?
The Huawei Mate 10 Pro comes in a deep blue box, which simply bares the name of the device and touts the company’s partnership with Leica. Inside the packaging you have the Huawei Mate 10 Pro itself, the USB Type C cables, the Wall Charger, SIM ejector tool, USB C to 3.5mm port, and a soft silicon case.
Initial Impressions: The Complete Package
Without a doubt, the Huawei Mate 10 Pro is a gorgeous device. You have a metal body with the back of the device covered in glass that curves to meet the frame of the phone and giving it great ergonomics despite its screen size; of course, the aspect ratio also helps a little with that as well.
The downside, of course, is that it can be a bit of a fingerprint magnet so definitely use the accompanying case or have a cleaning cloth handy at all times.
In terms of button and port layout, you have the power button and volume rocker on the right side of the device.
Access to the SIM tray is found on the left.
You have the speaker grille and USB Type-C port on the bottom.
You also have an IR blaster up on top, which means that they’ve also gotten rid of the 3.5mm audio jack.
The front of the phone is dominated by the 6-inch Full HD+ OLED HDR display with an aspect ratio of 18:9; making the Mate 10 Pro the second device from Huawei to adopt the current display trend.
You’ve got extremely slim bezels on the top and bottom that measure in at 8.4mm, with just enough room for the earpiece and the 8-megapixel front camera.
Flip the phone over and you’ve got the dual rear cameras that has Leica’s stamp of approval. Gone is the the glass panel to highlight the dual camera setup. Now you’ve got the 12-megapixel RGB + 20-megapixel monochrome sensor in a vertical orientation with a stripe to emphasize the shooters. On either side of the cameras are the dual-tone flash and the laser auto focus system to help you get even sharper snaps.
Below that is the fingerprint scanner which is just as fast and accurate as ever.
Under the hood of the Huawei Mate 10 Pro is their new Kirin 970 octa-core processor. The huge battle cry for this SoC is its dedicated NPU that helps with AI functionality. In a nutshell, the AI aspect of the processor learns your usage habits to keep the phone running fast by determining which apps you use the most. The dedicated NPU also helps determine the shot your looking to take and adjusts setting accordingly; similar to the Intelligent Auto Mode we’ve seen in Sony devices. The Kirin 970 is paired with 6GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage. It’s running on the Android 8.0 Oreo with EMUI 8 on top of it and is juiced up by an ample 4000mah battery.
