Local Telco Provider PT&T seeking foreign partners for its comeback

Could they be the new major telco player to watch out for?

Do you still remember Philippine Telegraph and Telephone Corp. (PT&T), a former rival of PLDT before it has been badly affected by the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis? They are seeking a comeback soon enough, and they are looking for a foreign partner to support them.

In an interview with Inquirer, PT&T chair Salvador B. Zamora II said that they are considering China Telecom or India’s Jio as possible partners for their comeback to the telco industry. While PT&T does offer its Greendot shared broadband plans as stated  on their website, its plan on finding a foreign partner should help them become a “real third player” in the local telco industry. Right now, the industry is dominated by PLDT and Globe.

Should things go well with PT&T, this should create a major impact, as telco players will need to be more competitive with their pricing, along with expanding and improving their infrastructure. In addition, Zamora said that their plans to rehabilitate PT&T is part of their desire to provide better internet for Filipinos. “Why should we have the slowest internet at a [more] expensive rate?” Zamora said.

Do you think PT&T has what it takes to be the “real third player” in the local telco industry? Comment down below!
