Meet The Next Telco (Maybe): Avocado Broadband Telecoms

pole-2
The Philippine market has been waiting for a third player to arrive since forever. San Miguel Corporation and Telstra was supposed to be it, but for reasons still unknown to us that plan went kaput.

Then Abe from Yugatech stumbled onto a bill that lapsed into law back in June 30 of this year that grants a certain Avocado Telecoms the franchise to “install, establish, operate, and maintain for commercial purposes and in the public interest, in the Philippines and between the Philippines and other countries and territories, wire and/or wireless telecommunications systems”.

That sounds exactly like what a telco would do, though nothing is known about the new player. Apparently Avocado’s Director and Corporate Secretary is Val Antonia Suarez, who was President and CEO of the Philippine Stock Exchange last year.

Whoever the new telco is, they can’t come fast enough. More competition will eventually mean better prices and choices for consumers and we’re more than happy to welcome anybody that will break the duopoly of the two telcos now operating in the PH.
