The internet is creaking under the weight of all those streams
Video streaming services are enjoying record concurrent users as the world locks down to try and contain COVID-19, but all those people staying at home and watching are putting an enormous strain on networks around the world.
To help with that particular problem, Netflix has promised to reduce the video streaming quality in Europe for a month to try and alleviate the burden their service is putting on European networks.
“We estimate that this will reduce Netflix traffic on European networks by around 25% while also ensuring a good quality service for our members,” a Netflix spokesperson said in a statement.
As a majority of citizens in the countries hit by the disease work from home, the strain on networks around the world has increased dramatically, and telcos are trying to keep up with the demand.
The Philippine Chamber of Telecommunications Operators has recently reminded the public to use the internet responsibly, as the unprecedented demand for bandwidth from all the people staying at home.
