Netflix Is Making Philippine Graphic Novel Trese Into An Anime Series

It’s official: Netflix is the go-to place if you want to (legally) watch anime online. The streaming giant has beefed up its library through the years with a wide range of titles that range from well-known classics like Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away to underrated, obscure gems like K. It also doesn’t hurt that Netflix has a wide variety of subtitle options for more than 20 languages, which makes getting into the latest hit relatively painless.

And Netflix isn’t stopping there: the company has announced that it’s adding even more titles for its 2021 lineup through its #NetFlixAnimeFes event. A total of 16 titles are anticipated for release throughout next year, which include one anime based on the Philippine graphic novel series “Trese,” making it the only content from the Philippines joining Netflix’s roster of anime offerings.

Trese is a multi-awarded graphic novel illustrated by Kajo Baldisimo and written by Budjette Tan. First published in 2008, Trese is the story of a 13-year old detective named Alexandra Trese who employs supernatural forces to aid in her investigations in Manila. In the comics she fights creatures taken from Philippine mythology like duwendes (elfs), santelmo (St. Elmo’s fire), and aswangs (ghosts). Think Constantine, but with manananggals.

The adaptation was announced two years ago in 2018 and we’re finally close to seeing Kajo Baldisimo and Budjette Tan’s best-selling work come to life. This series is animated by the Jakarta & Singapore based film company BASE Entertainment, and produced by Jay Oliva, Shanty Harmayn, and Tanya Yuson.

Trese isn’t the only new anime series that Neflix is releasing in 2021. There’s a list of all of the new Netflix-backed titles so far that’ll be hitting their screens next year:
