This is in line with what other companies have been doing in Europe

With so many people at home and watching Netflix during the enhanced community lockdown, the overall bandwidth of telecom companies is under tremendous strain. To help alleviate this, the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) is asking Netflix to work with them to help manage the streaming bitrate to ease data congestion during the lockdown.

Netflix has agreed to the measure, and has developed a way to reduce traffic by 25% while still maintaining the quality of service, and says that its customers should continue to enjoy the quality that comes with their plan.Ken Florance, VP Content Delivery: “Given the crisis, we’ve developed a way to reduce Netflix’s traffic on telecommunications networks by 25% while also maintaining the quality of our service. So consumers should continue to get the quality that comes with their plan – whether it’s Ultra-High, High or Standard Definition. We believe that this will provide significant relief to congested networks and will be deploying it in [Philippines] for the next 30 days”.

The Philippine Chamber of Telecommunications Operators has recently reminded the public to use the internet responsibly, as the unprecedented demand for bandwidth from all the people staying at home.
