A deeper look at the state of 4G in the Philippines

Last month, OpenSignal revealed its study on the state of 4G in the Philippines, and noted that while Globe has wider 4G availability, Smart offers better 4G speeds. This time around, OpenSignal gave a more detailed analysis of its report, presenting it on a region-per-region basis.

In a quick overview, their May to July regional results mirror that of their national results from the same period, with the Visayas region having nearly the same 4G speed for both Globe and Smart.

 

In their detailed per region analysis, it is very evident that Smart dominates Globe in terms of 4G speeds, with NCR and the Mindanao region having the best internet speeds at 12.4mbps and 11.7mbps respectively. Globe, on the other hand, has the best 4G speeds at NCR and the Visayas region at 7.8mbps and 7mbps respectively.

 

As for LTE availability, Globe has a broader 4G coverage than Smart, with NCR and the Visayas region being its strongest areas at 72.5% and 63.9% respectively. Smart, on the other hand, has the best 4G coverage in NCR and the Visayas Region at 67.5% and 55.6% respectively.

What do these graphs and figures signify? While the region-per-region confirms OpenSignal’s nationwide findings, Smart and Globe need to strengthen their 4G availability in the North Central Luzon. As for speed, both networks need to improve their infrastructure in the Visayas Region, as Globe and Smart’s 4G speeds in the region are not that high.
