PH Internet Speeds Getting Better As PLDT Expands Fiber Rollout

It’s still not great, but it is improving

While internet speeds in the Philippines isn’t as good as our neighbors in SEA, fixed broadband internet speeds are reportedly getting better according to Ookla’s latest Speedtest Global Index report. In the report, the firm says that the country’s download speeds have jumped 50 percent from 10.16 Mbps to 15.67 Mbps, with upload speeds going from 7.28 Mbps to 13.53 Mbps.

PLDT, being the biggest provider for fixed-line broadband is saying that the speed increase is thanks partly to their wider rollout to high-speed internet via fiber broadband.

“These results reflect the growing impact of our ongoing efforts to provide fiber-powered broadband services to more customers in more areas of the country,” said Oscar A. Reyes, Jr., PLDT SVP and Head of Consumer Business Market Development.

PLDT’s expansion of their Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) network has reached the four million homes passed, and the company is looking to expand fixed broadband coverage to 30 percent or around 5.1 million homes passed.

PLDT is also looking to give copper-based DSL subscribers Fibr-fast internet, with the company saying that virtually all of their 1.3 million copper-based DSL subscribers will enjoy fiber-like speeds by 2019.

“Ookla’s latest report reinforces our gains and successes in bringing high-speed internet to more Filipinos nationwide,” Reyes concluded. “In the past year, we’ve strengthened our leadership in the fixed broadband business and we look forward to building on this momentum as we continue to invest in network infrastructure that will benefit more Filipino homes.”
