You can buy everything in China, even app ratings

Ever wonder why that craptastic app that you recently downloaded has such high ratings in Apple’s App Store? Well, a supposed photo that has gone viral recently in tech land shows how: apparently you can hire companies in China that does nothing but boost your App Store ranking by repeatedly downloading, installing and uninstalling your app all day long.

The photo shows a woman sitting in front of dozens of iPhone 5c’s, doing nothing but installing apps from the Apple App Store.

According to Tech in Asia, the practice is widespread in China, and charges for the service are pretty steep – to break into the top 10 free apps chart you’ll have to pay around RMB 70,000 or Php 496336. Staying there is even more costly, and will cost you around RMB 405,000 or Php 2873101 a week.

So why the setup? Well, Apple’s managed to crack down on PC-based app manipulation via bots, so this is probably the most effective way of boosting your the app rating of crappy apps without getting banhammered by Apple.
