All systems go for 5G
Confirming previous reports of a wider 5G rollout in the Philippines, PLDT will proceed its 5G commercial launch as early as first quarter of 2020.
“We’re open to buying, renting or co-locating towers for 5G. I think we will start with what we have, with what’s available,” PLDT Chairman and CEO Manuel V. Pangilinan said in a report by Philippine Star.
PLDT initially planned to deploy 5G by the end of 2019, but deferred it to have a better understanding of the technology.
To recap, PLDT-Smart has deployed 5G networks in the PLDT Tower in Makati, in Clark, Pampanga, and in Araneta City, Cubao. For its initial commercial rollout, PLDT will be utilizing 5G equipment from Huawei and Ericsson.
The commercial rollout will be made in select areas intially, as PLDT is still studying the demand for 5G in the Philippines.
“We see 5G taking off, maybe not as quickly as us because there’s the handsets issue, there’s the buildout issue of the network, so the use cases are still not clear. But it’s build as you go on,” Pangilinan adds.
